MUSIC MENTORING / NATIONAL / Nov 2008 - Sept 2010
Project Management
CDH has a collective 30 years experience of the arts and in particular project management. We won the contract from Youth Music, the national charity, to deliver the training for the mentors being recruited into the Youth Music Mentoring Training.
Based on extensive research and interviews with past participants and mentors CDH devised a programme of training that took place across England to ensure that there were firstly a base line of competency and then progression routes for the mentors to enhance their skills, knowledge and understanding of the role to take into the field.
Initially a handbook was developed and core training for the 100+ mentors was delivered regardless of experience. Then working closely with MCH Consulting a two day course was developed that focused on the Psychologies and Techniques required for the practice in the field, particularly with hard to reach young people.
These days were split by three months and using social media and other web 2.0 technologies weekly reminders were sent to the trainees to ensure that what was taught was not forgotten. The second session used live role play with a professional actor to reinforce the learning as well as thorough handouts and resource materials.
To ensure that there was sustainability 16 ‘super mentors’ were identified and put through a further two days training in London with among others Peter Renshaw so as to develop future trainers in each region. Peter commented on the training:
“Many thanks for all the hard work you and Karen put in behind the scenes to make last Thursday such a success. - at least I think it was a success for a great group of people! They were so receptive and it is amazing how responsive they were in the afternoon had some memorable moments in other mentoring development sessions, but this one was special - and one to remember. I hope the group shared the same feelings. So a big thank for this”
The training programme has been greeted by trainees and evaluators alike with great enthusiasm and the training and resource materials continue to be used on a regular basis still today.
